Stormwater Upgrade, Fourth Ave, Waiheke Island

Located adjacent to one of Waiheke’s popular beaches, Onetangi, the Stormwater upgrade works along Fourth Avenue included open trenching of 360m of concrete stormwater pipe. Installation of 9 manholes and 7 catchpits.

The upgraded outfall boosted 900dia marine grade concrete spun pipe, that was blended into it’s surrounding environment and rock rip rap placed to prevent beach erosion. These works involved refined handwork and rock placement by the site team.
Works also involved heavy coordination with the local businesses and buses to prevent disturbance.

A challenge that was encountered, were deep trenches and excavations in dry soft sand – these conditions are very difficult to trench in, and can be a high risk activity for personnel and vehicles passing by. This challenge was over-come by detailed planning and hazard analysis, using trench shields that were sunk in stages, and backfilled every evening to provide a stabilised surface for the public.

Kerry Drainage & Civil worked closely with the local facilities and Auckland Council to ensure minimal disruption was encountered by the public – Kerry Drainage & Civil staged these works around peak tourist activities.
